| 外国人のためのメンタルヘルス カウントセリング
米国のコロンビア大学などで医療人類学を学び、当学部精神神経科学講座の研究生であるマキシン・ランドルさんが1993年から現在まで標題のようなカウンセリングを行っています。対象は、主に当大学の留学生とその家族が中心ですが、外国人でメンタルヘルスに関して相談を希望される方は御相談下さい。
カウンセリングの受付は、現在のところ地域医療部の受付ですが平成11年4月からは新しく設置される総合診療センターで受付ける予定です。本カウンセリングについて外国人に理解してもらいやすいように英文で書いていただきました。
Transcultural Mental Health Counseling Clinic
for Foreign Residents
The aim of this service is to provide culturally sensitive mental health
care for the many foreigners residing in Okinawa. This includes international
students of the various universities and specialist training schools, university
teachers, junior high school and high school foreign English teaching assistants,
foreign spouses of local citizens, business related families, and Okinawan
families repatriated from Asian and South American countries. According
to the most recent report from the International Exchange Division of the
Okinawan Prefectural Government (December, 1997), there are currently 7,285
residents representing more than 90 different countries in Okinawa.
The basic sources of stress for most sojourners, aside from the uprooting
process itself, are the ensuing conflict of cultural values between one's
own values and those of the host country (culture shock) and the inevitable
language and communication barriers. If these stressors severely impact
an individual or are unrelieved for an extended period of time, they can
trigger the onset of severe emotional distress or even mental disorders
in some of the more vulnerable individuals.
The transcultural mental health consultation clinic is easily accessible
to all departments for referral. As the onset of emotional distress often
initially presents as a somatic complaint, it is hoped that the above categories
of foreigners who come for help to the various outpatient clinics can be
made aware that the counseling service is available to them. It is through
this kind of cooperative effort that prevention and early intervention in
mental health of the foreign community can be realized.
